What's a Cairn?

I came across Cairns in the Scottish Highlands and the San Juan mountains of Colorado. In both cases they signified the answer to my question: Where are we headed? That way – to the Cairn on the horizon! I was delighted to find that while marking the way forward, Cairns do not define the path one will take to get from here to there – you have to find that on your own. I found myself creating Cairns around my house and yard to remind me: you are on a path… moving forward… pay attention… watch for the Cairn on the horizon… be present to your journey… mark the way for others who follow.
