The purpose of our website is to introduce you to the concept of Organizations as Organisms. We imagine organizations as living systems that take in and process energy and information and are made up of individuals that act together as an ecosystem, connected to and dependent upon their environment and forming a network of relationships that create culture, norms, and governance.

Like other complex organisms, organizations are multi-cellular (composed of many diverse individuals), have a range of different structures (from teams to divisions to multinational corporations), are complex and dynamic (rather than complicated and pre-programmed), and are co-opetitive (cooperative and competitive) with other organisms in their environment. Organizations are fascinating new organisms; still in their infancy, learning to learn, becoming self-aware, testing their power on a global scale, trying to find their place in the greater scheme of life and imagining a contribution far beyond “markets” and “economics”.

Our goal for the website is two-fold: first to make these concepts clear and understandable; as simple as possible without destroying the wonder and mystery that are the essence of “life” and “living”. Secondly, we want to engage you in a dialogue; to hear your voice, your ideas, and your experiences as you interact with the organisms in your own personal organizational world.

Dr. Carol Mase is a biologist, veterinarian, educator, coach-consultant, and self-directed learner. She has a BA in psychology, Masters in Interpersonal Relations/Human Ecology, and 15 years of experience as a practicing Veterinarian and educator. Prior to joining the business community, Dr. Mase completed three fellowships researching the cell-cell communication that allows complex, non-linear tissues to coordinate and integrate autonomous actions; she is the inventor of the first patent for an anabolic treatment for human osteoporosis.

Bringing ten years as a pharmaceutical executive, living in the US and EU Dr. Mase has worked in global marketing, strategic planning, and large scale organizational change. In 2000 she formed what is now Cairn Consulting, working as an organizational and management consultant, executive coach, and thought partner. NeuroIntegrated™ Coaching and EmPassioned™ Leadership are the realization of fifteen years of study in the areas of consciousness, neuroscience, quantum physics, psychology, and business. In addition to these programs, Dr. Mase has developed numerous metaphoric concepts and tools that help practitioners and clients in the areas of organizational, team, and personal development. Her work reflects her passion for self-directed learning and the application of systems thinking to business. She is an active member of the Society of Organizational Learning.
